Terms of Use

Plain terms for a free extension, including what it cannot do.

1. Agreement

By installing or using ClearAmp ("the extension"), you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please uninstall it.

2. What ClearAmp is

ClearAmp is a browser extension that adjusts and boosts the audio volume of the browser tab you are viewing, and applies optional audio processing (limiting, dynamic range compression, speech-band equalisation, mono downmix) to that audio.

3. Licence

ClearAmp is provided free of charge for personal and commercial use. You may use it on as many machines as you like.

You may not:

• redistribute a modified version of the extension as if it were ClearAmp;
• sell the extension or charge for access to it;
• use the ClearAmp name, mark or branding for another product.

4. Cost

ClearAmp v1.0 is completely free. There are no advertisements, no affiliate links, no subscriptions, no in-app purchases, and no account.

If a paid tier is ever offered, it will consist of new, additional features. Everything included in a free version stays free permanently. Features you already have will not be moved behind a payment.

5. Privacy

ClearAmp collects no data and makes no network requests. See the Privacy Policy for the detail.

6. Hearing safety — please read

ClearAmp can increase audio volume to six times its original level.

Loud audio can damage your hearing, and it can damage speakers or headphones. You are responsible for the volume you choose.

Please:

• Start low and raise the volume gradually, especially with headphones.
• Be careful with unfamiliar audio: a quiet clip may be followed by a loud one, and a boost applied to the quiet part will still be applied to the loud part.
• Remember that boost applies to the whole tab, including advertisements and autoplaying content.

ClearAmp's limiter reduces distortion and holds peaks below full scale. It is a sound quality feature, not a hearing protection device. It does not make loud audio safe, and it cannot protect you from a volume you have chosen.

7. No warranty

ClearAmp is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

Specifically, and without limiting the above, it is not warranted that:

• the extension will work on every website (some sites deliver audio in ways that make boosting technically impossible — see §8);
• the extension will be uninterrupted, error-free, or compatible with every future version of Chrome;
• the extension will not conflict with other extensions that process audio on the same page.

8. Known limitations

Stated plainly, because a surprise is worse than a limitation:

• Some sites cannot be boosted. When a site streams audio from a different domain without the necessary cross-origin headers, connecting it to the browser's audio engine would silence it permanently. ClearAmp detects this and refuses to do it. Volume reduction still works on those sites; boost above 100% does not.
• Local files opened directly in the browser are treated by Chrome as separate origins, so boost is not available for them.
• Browser pages (chrome://, the Chrome Web Store, the PDF viewer) cannot be modified by any extension, including this one.
• The limiter is not perfect. The browser's dynamics processor has no look-ahead, so it reacts to sudden peaks with a few milliseconds of lag. A soft-clipping stage catches what gets through. The result is dramatically cleaner than plain gain, but it is not mathematically distortion-free, and it is not claimed to be.
• Settings reset when you navigate to a different site, unless you have turned on "Remember this site". This is deliberate: it prevents a setting you have forgotten about from surprising you somewhere else.

9. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the developer shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or any loss of data, hearing damage, or damage to audio equipment, arising out of your use of or inability to use the extension.

10. Changes

These terms may be updated. Material changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date. Continuing to use the extension after an update constitutes acceptance.

11. Termination

You may stop using ClearAmp at any time by uninstalling it, which also removes all of its stored settings.
